Weekly Gem #168 Something's (pleasantly) fishy

Published 9/1/2018

Location: This ‘hidden gem’ is located in Caras Park, Missoula, MT (see the  Clue Me! Map ).

Debut

“Returning” invites you to come up close and grab a fin. This school of steel trout is meandering between granite pebbles, just up the bank from the Clark Fork River.

Jeffrey Funk (the artist) designed these smooth steel fish and climbable rocks to be played on, and they have successfully lured children for over 25 years. In fact, some of those first kids are now bringing their own spawn.

The trout are swimming with such intention, focused on where they’re returning to (or from?). Their form is so realistic that if you grab hold, it’s almost as if they’re pulling you along. Hang on for a while, and see where they take you.
