Weekly Gem #94 Three women, and a soldier

Published 11/11/2016

Location

This 'hidden gem' is located between The Wall and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC (see Clue Me! Map).  The Vietnam Women's Memorial is an extraordinary work of art. It beautifully honors the women who are the subject of the piece, while simultaneously conveying a gut-wrenching and heart-rending story about why they and all veterans must continuously be thanked and honored.  The risks taken, pain, tenacity to save every life, fear, loss, and doing it again as long as it takes.

As described by the author of this hidden gem:

"Three nurses and a badly wounded soldier. I don't know what the sculptor saw, but this is what I see. One nurse is fighting like hell to keep the young soldier's name off the Wall. A second nurse is gripping her elbow, by force of will telling her to "Hang on, the chopper's coming." A third nurse holds an empty helmet, and conveys a terrible sadness for the ones she couldn't save. It is worth a good, long, look."

Every American needs to see this sculpture, and take a good, long look.
