Weekly Gem #48 Hjem Sveet Hjem

Published 11/21/2015

Location: This Thanksgiving week's 'hidden gem' is located on the Main Drag in Elk Horn, IA (see Clue Me! map).  Perhaps Grandma will be using the smithy in this Hjem to cook the turkey.  Mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberries, some Havarti cheese on freshly baked rye bread ... your mouth is watering, isn't it?

Being a traditional Danish Hjem, there may also be some unusual additions to the meal.  For example, if they bring out some crackers and "Jell-O" (pronounce 'yellow' by the Danes), especially if the Jell-O is an off-yellow, it's not an "off" Jell-O. It's lutefisk.

One beauty of Thanksgiving is that there's room for all kinds of traditions.  Whatever yours, we at Skooblevart wish you a very healthy and happy Thanksgiving.

Anyone for some kogt torsk?

Here's the hidden gem entry from our Clue Me! map.

Description

VikingHjem

Why It's Interesting

See how a Viking smithy lived in about the year 900! This is a great replica of a viking hjem (home) right down to the door hinges (forged right there at the smithy's furnace). You can come close to living the life of a Viking by just wandering around the hjem, and listening to the Viking's tale.
